My Bucket List

Even with traveling abroad (Ireland) and attending multiple out-of-state weddings in 2022, I was only able to cross off one thing from my Bucket List. And to be honest, it was something I had just recently added. It was to drive a moped. Definitely not a classic BL item, and for sure not something that everyone needs to do in their lifetime, but still pretty cool. I did it on September 10th on Block Island. Two things- 1. I was absolutely terrible at it and 2. Block Island is a must-go. I will say though, with some more practice, I can see myself being much better at it. I was admittedly nervous once we got going, especially with the precious cargo. Plus, a bicycle is the closest thing to a moped that I’ve ever ridden, but that was years ago.

But back to BI. Highly recommend going in the off-season which is really just not during the summer, particularly after Labor Day. A lot of people on the Island said how crazy it can be during the summer, so maybe if that’s your thing, go for it. Like I guess if you’re 18-24, you’d enjoy it during July and August. Anyone older than that might not want the super busy weekends and opt instead for mid-September.

With regards to the Bucket List though, this year I read Die with Zero: Getting All You Can from Your Money and Your Life by Bill Perkins. I really enjoyed it and its message about living, saving, and spending your money. One of the biggest takeaways I got was the idea of swapping a bucket list for “Time Buckets”. He suggests drawing a “timeline of your life from now to the grave, then divide it into intervals of five or ten years. Each of those intervals is a time bucket.” Then you add your key experiences (activities or events you definitely want to have during your lifetime) and drop each of them into specific buckets. And don’t think about money, just about the point in your life when you’d like to have each experience. You’ll start to realize that some of these are better done at certain ages. A number of experiences are limited as we age, and our health declines, so it’s important to really consider when in our life a certain experience or activity can best be done.

I thought it was a fascinating way to look at it, and definitely something I plan to take into consideration with my Bucket List! Anyway, do you have a Bucket List yet? Or maybe you want to start doing Time Buckets! You should! Let’s help each other cross something off in 2023! And as always, I could go for a few more recommendations to add so let me know!
