We all know there’s a TON of Christmas songs out there that we could hear less of, or even completely go without. Probably too many to name, so I’ve come up with the songs I feel are under-appreciated. Some of these are in the rotation already, but it wouldn’t hurt hearing them a little more. Without further ado, I present my Most Underrated Christmas Songs. Enjoy!
10. Christmastime – Smashing Pumpkins
Good Christmas tune that you wouldn’t expect coming from an alt rock band like SP
9. Every Year, Every Christmas – Luther Vandross
Have yourself a very soulful holiday with the best song off of Luther’s Christmas album, This Is Christmas.
8. The Christmas Song – Dave Matthews Band
Not your father’s “The Christmas Song” – this is a whole different story. Saw them perform it live a few years ago at the Garden and it was tremendous.
7. Linus and Lucy – Vince Guaraldi Trio
Yes, it’s instrumental, but how fun is this song? Answer: so fun. I dare you not to do whatever weird dance you have to this song.
6. Heat Miser/Snow Miser – George Irving & Dick Shawn
This song comes from one of my favorite animated Christmas movies, The Year Without A Santa Claus. I also suggest listening to Big Bad Voodoo Daddy’s version.
5. Underneath the Tree – Kelly Clarkson
It’s only a few years old, but it’s so good. Definitely needs more airplay.
4. When My Heart Finds Christmas and Parade of the Wooden Soldiers – Harry Connick, Jr.
I wasn’t gunna make this Top 11 list, so I just put these two songs from Harry together. They’re both great. In fact, his entire first Christmas albums is one of the best out there.
3. Fairytale of New York – The Pogues ft. Kirsty MacColl
This is one of my all-time favorite Christmas songs and I wish more people knew it. And obviously I have to give you Christy Moore’s version.
2. The Christmas Waltz – Frank Sinatra
I strongly feel that if it wasn’t for the popularity of “Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas”, this song would take it’s place. Damn, Frank, can you do no wrong?
1. Christmas – Blues Traveler
Easily the most underrated Christmas song out there. The Rodney Dangerfield of Christmas songs, if you will. No idea why this isn’t in the mix on all the stations. Blues Traveler, famous for jams like “Run Around” and “Hook”, release a Christmas song, and blow so many others out of the water. Play this song every hour on the hour!
