Grammy picks! Have I listened to everything nominated? Nope. Am I still going to give some of my picks? Yup. So without further ado, here they are:
RECORD OF THE YEAR
Fancy – Iggy Azalea ft. Charli XCX
Chandelier – Sia
Stay With Me (Darkchild Version) – Sam Smith
Shake It Off – Taylor Swift
All About That Bass – Meghan Trainor
- Shake It Off no doubt about it.
SONG OF THE YEAR
All About That Bass – Meghan Trainor
Chandelier – Sia
Shake It Off – Taylor Swift
Stay With Me (Darkchild Version) – Sam Smith
Take Me To Church – Hozier
- Don’t
careknow what the difference is between Record vs. Song is, but Shake It Off wins again.
BEST NEW ARTIST
- Iggy gets my vote. It seemed like she was all over the place; on the radio, in the news with Swaggy P, etc. But don’t sleep on Bastille. Even though “Pompeii” is kind of annoying, “Of the Night” is a very cool mashup of Snap!’s “Rhythm is a Dancer” and Corona’s “Rhythm of the Night”, two great 90s songs. Also, I don’t get the appeal of Sam Smith. He has a nice voice, but his songs are just so meh.
BEST POP SOLO PERFORMANCE
All Of Me (Live) – John Legend
Chandelier – Sia
Stay With Me (Darkchild Version) – Sam Smith
Shake It Off – Taylor Swift
Happy (Live) – Pharrell Williams
- All of Me is only nominated for this award, plus the Tiesto Remix version in the Best Remixed Recording. Therefore, it gets my vote here. Really, really good song. And the Tiesto Remix isn’t half bad either. John Legend deserves this one.
BEST POP DUO/GROUP PERFORMANCE
Fancy – Iggy Azalea ft. Charli XCX
A Sky Full Of Stars – Coldplay
Say Something – A Great Big World with Christina Aguilera
Bang Bang – Jessie J, Ariana Grande & Nicki Minaj
Dark Horse – Katy Perry ft. Juicy J
- I’ve already written about how much I love Bang Bang, so obviously that gets my vote.
BEST TRADITIONAL POP VOCAL ALBUM
Cheek To Cheek – Tony Bennett & Lady Gaga
Nostalgia – Annie Lennox
Night Songs – Barry Manilow
Sending You A Little Christmas – Johnny Mathis
Partners – Barbra Streisand With Various Artists
- Holy crap these people are still around? I mean Johnny Mathis is like 80 and Tony Bennett is almost 90! Good for them. I wonder who the oldest person to ever win a Grammy was… Quick Google search tells me it was of course ol’ Pinetop Perkins at 97 years young. Pinetop Perkins is such an old-person’s name, it’s not even funny. Oh ya, back to my vote: the legend that is Tony Bennett & Lady Gaga, Cheek to Cheek.
BEST R&B PERFORMANCE
Drunk In Love – Beyoncé ft. Jay Z
New Flame – Chris Brown ft. Usher & Rick Ross
It’s Your World – Jennifer Hudson ft. R. Kelly
Like This – Ledisi
Good Kisser – Usher
- For sure Drunk In Love #surfboard
BEST R&B SONG
Drunk In Love – Beyoncé ft. Jay Z
Good Kisser – Usher
New Flame – Chris Brown ft. Usher & Rick Ross
Options (Wolfjames Version) – Luke James
The Worst – Jhené Aiko
- I would never say something bad about Beyonce, so Drunk In Love wins again!
BEST RAP PERFORMANCE
3005 – Childish Gambino
0 To 100 / The Catch Up – Drake
Rap God – Eminem
I – Kendrick Lamar
All I Need Is You – Lecrae
- Now this is a tough one. All of these are really good. (I did have to look up and listen to Lecrae’s song though, still not bad). Anyways, this Grammy goes to Eminem, a true Rap God.
BEST RAP/SUNG COLLABORATION
Blak Majik – Common ft. Jhené Aiko
The Monster – Eminem ft. Rihanna
Tuesday – I Love Makonnen ft. Drake
Studio – Schoolboy Q ft. BJ The Chicago Kid
Bound 2 – Kanye West & Charlie Wilson
- Blak Majik wasn’t bad, I just didn’t hear it that much. I thought The Monster was pretty good. Tuesday blows, I really don’t know how people like that song. Don’t know much about Schoolboy Q, but Studio is kind of fuckin’ dope. But in the end Bound 2 is the best collaboration here with Ye and Uncle Charlie, uh-huh hunny. For an even better collab between these two, check out See Me Now. (Yay, now we get to hear an acceptance speech from Kanye!)
BEST RAP SONG
Anaconda – Nicki Minaj
Bound 2 – Kanye West & Charlie Wilson
I – Kendrick Lamar
We Dem Boyz – Wiz Khalifa
0 To 100 / The Catch Up – Drake
- Hol’ up, hol’ up, now I’m getting fed up. What the hell is the difference between Song and Performance? And how come the same songs aren’t nominated in both categories? Do less, Grammy’s. Tough choice here, but my vote here goes to “I” by Kendrick Lamar Duckworth.
BEST RAP ALBUM
The New Classic – Iggy Azalea
Because The Internet – Childish Gambino
Nobody’s Smiling – Common
The Marshall Mathers LP2 – Eminem
Oxymoron – Schoolboy Q
Blacc Hollywood – Wiz Khalifa
- MM LP2 because I’ve listened to the most songs on that album than any other album in this category.
BEST COUNTRY SOLO PERFORMANCE
Give Me Back My Hometown – Eric Church
Invisible – Hunter Hayes
Automatic – Miranda Lambert
Something In The Water – Carrie Underwood
Cop Car – Keith Urban
- No news to anyone, Carrie Underwood has pipes. She absolutely kills it in every song she does and Something in The Water is no exception. It’s a pretty great song, complete with an interpretation of Amazing Grace. Obviously that’s where my vote goes.
BEST COUNTRY DUO/GROUP PERFORMANCE
Gentle On My Mind – The Band Perry
Somethin’ Bad – Miranda Lambert with Carrie Underwood
Day Drinking – Little Big Town
Meanwhile Back At Mama’s – Tim McGraw ft. Faith Hill
Raise ‘Em Up – Keith Urban ft. Eric Church
- Some serious selections here! I think it’s between the first two. I really like Somethin’ Bad. But I love the song Gentle On My Mind; originally by John Hartford, popularized by Glen Campbell, and I think best performed by Dean Martin (probably because of the horns). The Band Perry’s performance of the song at the CMA’s was great; a whole new take from John, Glen and Dino. They start really slow and pick up the speed by the second verse. I thought it was very well done so that gets my vote for sure.
BEST COUNTRY SONG
American Kids – Kenny Chesney
Automatic – Miranda Lambert
Give Me Back My Hometown – Eric Church
I’m Not Gonna Miss You – Glen Campbell
Meanwhile Back At Mama’s – Tim McGraw ft. Faith Hill
- I wasn’t crazy about any of these songs, but here goes nothing: Can I tell you something without you getting mad? I didn’t really like American Kids. And it seems like I might be the only person who feels this way. I felt he really mailed it in but I get why people like it. I’m a huge Kenny fan too, but it’s just a little too pop-y for me. Automatic is a good song, I particularly enjoy its lyrics reminiscing on the past. Give Me Back My Hometown is okay, people seem to love Eric Church, but this one wasn’t his best. It would be nice to see Glen Campbell win one last Grammy as I’m Not Gonna Miss You is his last studio recording and a genuinely good song. And Meanwhile Back At Mama’s is decent at best. Having said all that, American Kids is probably the best song of the five nominated and alas gets my vote.
BEST MUSIC VIDEO
We Exist – Arcade Fire
Turn Down For What – DJ Snake & Lil Jon
Chandelier – Sia
Happy – Pharrell Williams
The Golden Age – Woodkid ft. Max Richter
- Hey Sia, what the hell am I watching here? Actually forget that, Turn Down For What is infinity times weirder. But Grammy’s, where is “Anaconda” in this category? I think you really fudged up on that one. Anyways, the winner is clear in this one, right? How good is the Happy music video? So good. Really uplifting, energetic, fun and obviously happy. Try not to dance when watching the video, I dare you.
