“New” Music in 2024 – Pt. 1

I simply cannot give up writing this post. It has easily become my favorite and may single-handedly be the reason CE still exists. So let’s just get right into it!

Murder on the Dancefloor – Sophie Ellis-Bextor (2002)

This track found renewed popularity in 2024 thanks to its feature in Saltburn—a movie I never got around to watching. But let’s be real: this song doesn’t need a cinematic tie-in to shine. It’s a funky, irresistibly catchy tune that holds up surprisingly well.

Pool House – The Backseat Lovers (2019)

The first time I heard this gem was through my brother Mark, who covered it during a set at The Dot Tavern earlier this year. He’s played it a few more times at Landmark (Sundays, 5-8pm), and honestly, it’s one of his standout performances. The song itself is incredible—raw, melodic, and filled with a vibe that sticks with you long after it ends.

Good Time Tonight – Kool & The Gang (1981)

This one’s a no-brainer. Simple, smooth, fun, and timeless—that’s Kool & The Gang at their best. A guaranteed crowd-pleaser with feel-good energy to spare.

Pocketful of Rainbows – Elvis Presley (1960)

I stumbled upon this classic over the summer at Shipwrecked in Falmouth, where a musician was playing acoustic covers. His version was so unique and captivating that I was genuinely surprised when he revealed it was an Elvis song. It’s always refreshing to rediscover something old in a new way.

Here Comes the Night – Them ft. Van Morrison (1965)

Sometimes, a song doesn’t need a deep explanation—it just clicks. This is one of those tracks. Timeless and effortlessly enjoyable.

Will It Go Round In Circles – Billy Preston (1972)

I caught Dave Matthews Band covering this at a show back in July, and their take was funky, fresh, and ridiculously fun. It’s one of those songs that reminds you how versatile good music can be.

Freed From Desire – Gala, Molella, Phil Jay (1997)

I love a good 90s dance song and this one fits the bill perfectly. It also seemed to make a comeback this year, popping up in soccer and rugby circles—proving it’s still a certified hype track.

This Is the Day – The The (1983)

This one slid into my Spotify Discover Weekly playlist in mid-October, and while the 80s aren’t usually my go-to decade for music, I found myself vibing with it. Bonus points for the band’s name—it’s weirdly hilarious and memorable.

Modern Girl – Bleachers (2023)

I Shazam’d this song, along with what I’m guessing were thousands of others, and for good reason—it’s ridiculously fun. The Bleachers are definitely a band I want to dive into more.

Standing Next to You – Jung Kook (2023)

This song is straight fire. I had no idea who Jung Kook was at first (he kind of sounds like a Jonas Brother), but now I’m intrigued. They earned extra points from me by immediately dropping a remix featuring Usher, which was a genius move.

Wondering Why – The Red Clay Strays (2022)

This is absolutely something I first heard on 92.5 The River—an all-around fantastic station for discovering both new hits and hidden gems. Their curation is spot on, and this song is no exception.

Check back later this week for Part 2!
