Boston Sports Championship Predictor

Boston Week is wrapping up but we’re just getting started here in the Hub for a hopefully long trip into the playoffs for both the B’s and C’s.

Over the past two+ decades, Boston fans like myself, have been spoiled with Championship runs that can never be under appreciated. And if you want my answer to the title of this post, the Celtics will be celebrating in the streets of Boston in June and I can’t wait.

Boom, blog post over, go back to your Friday plans.

But, rather than talk about how lucky we are and excited that Banner 18 or a possible raising of the Cup occurs later this Spring, I’d love to go back to our true roots of being a Boston sports fan. Being miserable.

I’m looking at you Sox and Pats.

Six championships since 2001 for the Pats. Four for the Sox since 2004. Both franchises hold the most titles in the respective sports in that timeframe and yet, here we are, April 19th, 2024, wondering how things got so bad, so fast.

I’ll start with my truest form of sports love, baseball and the current .500 Boston Red Sox. If I can get the camera to look at me directly, thanks.

WHAT ARE YOU DOING????

When in the past 21 years have we gone into season with such a hopeless feeling of not only a chance at making the playoffs, but in reality, finishing DEAD LAST in the division again. The decision making from the front office to sign/not sign certain players, the development of the minor league system has contributed to the unhappiness around the Nation.

But this offseason was by FAR the worst.

Not wanting to spend money? Not signing players who lived in your city as they waited all offseason for an offer only to sign with Arizona??? Arizona signed a player and you let them? The Diamondbacks have made it to the World Series more recently than you?

FIGURE IT OUT!

Now, I must point out that I contribute to this madness by still watching most of the games. Yes, the tradition of me and Matt going to the Patriots Day game continued this year and I was genuinely excited to be at the ole ball park. The product on the field was sad. The vibes in the park were great for a few innings. But I’m not one of the new-age, pink hatters, who want to dab on the jumbo screen.

I want to be standing up, losing my voice at a inning-ending double play to get out of a jam late in the game. Instead, I’m watching yet another season of poor defense that reminds me of when I played little league and we were 12.

Maybe that’s where you’ll say I’m getting old, or let the young people enjoy the games how they want to. But if you’re going to the Sox yesterday afternoon in the light mist in under 50 degrees, don’t you expect to at least watch a game that doesn’t make you want to leave before the 7th inning stretch?

Pats, it’s your turn.

I mean, where do I begin? I’m not going to talk about Brady, I won’t even talk about Belichick “mutually departing” or the new Apple Doc “The Dynasty”. They want you to believe that the NFL entertainment business is alive and well in these parts and we keep soaking it up.

I’m going to take a different approach with the team in Foxboro.

The draft that takes place next week will determine if they can begin a path towards a new identity and maybe glory. Or, fall back to where this team was for it’s entire lifespan pre-1997.

And I’ll go even further by saying, if this doesn’t get better quick, the Pats will be the least favorite team for most of the Boston fan base and it won’t be close.

I don’t have solutions. I like the QB’s, I wouldn’t mind trading back and getting more picks to rebuild. I like Mayo as a player and his attitude since being named the replacement, which, don’t get it twisted, he’s the replacement.

But we’re not winning a Super Bowl anytime soon. The delusion in some fans that we’ll strike gold and be right back to where we were for 20+ years is something even I don’t comprehend.

This past season, Sundays became a day for things other than football for yours truly. I occasionally turned into the games, watched at a bar or friends places, but, we’re now watching what every NFL fan watched for the past 20+ years.

I don’t know if I’m up for watching bad football.

Remember, I said we were spoiled. I understand we can be excited for the potential of a young upstart group led by some stud rookies. Maybe that happens and the fanbase rallies around them. We do love a bunch of no-names and young unproven guys to go prove everyone wrong and start a Dynasty.

Come this Fall, I have minimal hope for the Pats. Less hope for the Sox to be in the playoff race.

B’s and C’s, don’t screw this up!
